Creating a Paint Scheme Print

Cloth

Obviously the Devout has no cloth to speak of, so I'm going to switch over to a Guardian which has plenty of cloth to work with.

The brown mixes that I use contain the following colors / mediums:

  • GW Bestial Brown (P3 Bloodstone is close)
  • GW Vomit Brown (P3 Rucksack Tan is close)
  • GW Brown Ink
  • GW Black Ink
  • VMC Glaze Medium (GM)
  • VMC Matte Medium (MM)
  • water (H2O)

Step 1: I mix a healthy dose of ink into my base coat for three reasons.

  1. The thinner viscosity of the ink keeps the paint nice and thin.
  2. Inks are highly pigmented, much more so than paints usually. The addition of inks to paint increases their opacity and coverage. Bestial Brown will cover black in one pass if you lay it on heavy. If you thin it properly it takes two or more passes. By adding the ink I can almost always go with just one pass.
  3. It deepens the color.

A nice flat coat to work over.

Step 2: Again I'll use quite a bit of Matte Medium (MM) in this, as I want it to stick where I put it, not run all over the place as inks like to do.

A good glaze over the raised surfaces and deeper color in the recesses is what I'm after here.

Step 3: This is the actual main color. This is applied everywhere (thinly) except the deepest recesses and I feather it into those using a second brush.

If you leave too much of the wash showing the first try, go back and apply a very thin coat along the edges and feather it into the washed areas. This will smooth the transition from the darkest color to the later highlight colors.

Step 4: Standard procedure by now - apply this to the higher areas, leaving a thin strip of the previous color showing. Feather it together again to smooth the transition.

The highlights are starting to show now.

Step 5: Just the highest points now. This is my last pass on rank and file troops.

Step 6: For that added "pop" I hit just the upper points of folds or the hard edges of accent armor plates with this color.

All finished with the browns. I used this on the Devout as well as an accent color.

Tip #58
Pay attention to manufacturer’s warnings on spray cans. Extreme outside temperatures and humidity can ruin a model when spray priming or sealing.
